The Reconstruction period took place during the mid 19th century immediately following the civil war 1863-1866. President Andrew Johnson following president Lincoln's vision took a moderate position to bring the South back to "normal". They used the military to bring order and "suppress" violence against both blacks and whites. Following the election of 1866 radical Republicans blocked moderate initiatives and imposed more radical restrictions on former confederates. Republican legislatures were appointed, freemen were enfranchised and Black Codes were abolished. The Black Codes may have ended, but segregation did not end. Although the Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws are two different things, they are very related. The Jim Crow Laws are said to have been caused by the Black Codes.
