The Northern states viewed the Black Codes as a means of keeping the freed slaves from becoming independent and a tool used by white southerners for keeping the freemen socially and economically inferior. The North was generally strongly opposed to these laws. Unfortunately, there were also some Northern states that implemented Black Codes as well.
The Black Codes resulted in the continuation of segregation and distrust between whites, blacks, northerners and southerns. |
