As a result of the war, the South's economy was near collapse. The southern economy was destroyed by the war, infrastructure needed to be rebuilt and southern whites had lost their primary source of cheap labor, slave. The south also had to pay back their debt from the war and they still had to manage their giant farms.
They enacted the Black Codes which were restrictive laws on the black men and women that limited their prospects and rights. Even with the Emacipation Proclamation and the 13th amendment to the constitution being free was not free, especially if you were a black person in the south. The states implementing the most severe black codes were Mississippi and South Carolina. |
